A shower niche can be one of those small details that adds surprising time to an installation. Cutting tile for the back, sides and returns, finishing the edges, maintaining clean grout joints and waterproofing the assembly all require attention.

Schluter’s DESIGN-NICHE takes a different approach.

The prefabricated niche is made from powder-coated aluminum and arrives fully waterproof and ready to install — with no tile required inside the niche. For installers, that means fewer cuts, fewer grout joints and fewer finishing steps while still delivering a clean, intentional result.

Why Tile Pros Should Take a Look

Save labor where it counts.
Because the interior of the niche does not need to be tiled or grouted, installers can eliminate several of the detail-oriented steps associated with building a traditional tiled niche. Schluter specifically designed the system to reduce installation time.

Waterproofing is built into the system.
The niche integrates directly with the Schluter Shower System. Each kit includes a precut KERDI-BAND frame and KERDI-FIX to create the watertight connection to the surrounding wall assembly.

Adjust it to the tile instead of fighting the tile thickness.
The adjustable frame accommodates tile thicknesses from 1/8" to 2-3/16" and can be installed flush with the finished tile or left slightly proud to create a reveal-edge detail.

Keep grout lines looking intentional.
The niches are sized to coordinate with common tile formats, helping installers maintain continuous grout lines around the niche rather than interrupting the layout.

More design choices without more installation work.
DESIGN-NICHE is offered in 12" × 12", 12" × 24" and 12" × 48" sizes and can be installed vertically or horizontally. Schluter expanded the line in 2026 to nine TRENDLINE colors, giving contractors and designers more opportunities to coordinate niches with profiles, drains and other shower details.
